On 9/11, the electric car made its first successful voyage onto the streets of Port Huron. The fabrication of the new chain coupler was completed and the replacement of the motor went very smoothly. Thanks to Decker Gear, Inc. for their help in the fabrication process.
More detailed driving and mileage information will be forthcoming. As the batteries are broken in, the distance between each charge should increase.
Over the summer of 2008, a new battery box was fabicated out of aluminum and bolted to the floor of the car. The inside of the battery box was coated with a rubberized material to reduce conductivity. This is the same rubberized material used on tool handles.
There are six batteries installed in the battery box (8 volts each for a total of 48 volts). Air is able to flow completely around each of the batteries and the entire battery box is vented to the outside of the car. Two intake pipes scoop air from below the car and two outflow pipes exit the battery box at the top rear.
Many agree that the Trojan Brand battery is the "Cadillac" of deep-cycle batteries. The T-875 is an 8-volt battery. This car has six of these batteries and they are connected in series to provide 48 volts of power. Trojan batteries are sold in Fort Gratiot at Rhino Linings (across from Best Buy). The T-875 sells for $139 each (as of April 2008).
