Two very large earthquakes, both 9.0 or larger on the Richter scale, have taken place in the last decade. One took place on December 26, 2004 in the Indian Ocean and the other took place on March 11, 2011 near the east coast of Japan. Both earthquakes produced large tsunamis. Both earthquakes also had thousands of aftershocks in the months following the initial quake.
You may or may not know that with most major earthquakes, the aftershocks usually subside after a few days or maybe up to a week after. However, both of these large earthquakes had aftershocks for many months after the initial quake.
You also may or may not know that aftershocks do not take place in the exact location of the original quake. They vary slightly in latitude and longitude and they also vary in depth.
Our mission is to plot these aftershocks on a 3-dimensional map (latitude, longitude and depth). We will then compare and contrast the 3-D map from Japan's aftershocks with the 3-D map from the Indian Ocean aftershocks. Such a map can give us clues as to what the inside of the earth looks like.
You will be given a partial list of earthquake aftershocks either from 2004 or 2011. This list details latitude, longitude and depth. There are approximately 150 aftershocks on your list and each of you will have a different set of 150.
Run through your list and record just the number values for latitude, longitude and depth. Record your data in an Word document precisely as laid out below:
- You do not need to include units.
- You do not need to give me the dates or any other information.
- You must use one comma and one space between each number (no comma or space after the depth).
- Place your numbers precisely along the left margin of your document and hit return after each entry.
- Save your document as a PDF file and attach it to an e-mail message.
- Send me your e-mail when you are done. Do not send an incomplete list. Mail to: rhunckler@sc4.edu
Good luck.
