CHINA

Family Life

Traditionally, extended families all lived under one roof (grandparents, parents and children) and the family unit was considered the cornerstone of a successful society. The family came first before all else. While this can still be found (somewhat) in rural China, most family units in China consist of just the immediate family. Grandparents live in separate homes and the children are not expected to support them. During much of the 20th century, the family unit was no longer considered the most important part of society. The state came before all else.
